Nanowar of Steel - A Knight at the Opera (2014) I have written about this Italian band long-long time ago, true in a different language, can find that article here. Their brand new – and third – album it’s the same brilliant and hilarious. Putting metal and gay in the same sentence would be blasphemy and an unforgettable sin some years ago, but since Rob Halford publicly came out as gay in 1998, things are changed… We’ve got gay metal ever since! 😆
How much true gay flavor or how much deep irony it is in Nanowar, it’s impossible to see clearly from this distance, but actually it doesn’t really matter while the outcome it’s so brilliant.
Formed in 2003, called simply Nanowar at first, the band added “of Steel” to their name to parody fellow Italian band Rhapsody’s name change to Rhapsody of Fire. So, here we go, their third album recall the classic 1975’s Queen album title, “A Night at the Opera” and it’s called in the Manowar’s heroic-epic manner “A Knight at the Opera”. Released on 23 February 2014 , and the album features some old tracks re-recorded and some new ones. KXM - KXM (2014) This is how probably The Jimi Hendrix Experience would sound if they would be still around.
I was skeptical about this as I am skeptical about any type of so-called supergroups. And this is definitively a supergroup while we have here three rock icons such as Doug Pinnick of King’s X on vocals and bass; George Lynch of Dokken and Lynch Mob on guitars and Ray Luzier of Korn behind the drum kit. On the other hand I always loved the powerful rock trios such as Cream, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Rush, Motorhead (Ace of Spades era!), Primus, The Police, Nirvana, Muse, etc. And then again, I had my reserves regarding King’s X because their Christian affiliation/association. Don’t get me wrong, don’t care about the faith of anybody, it’s their own PRIVATE matter, but I don’t like to mix music and faith issues and don’t like to be guided, less, listening preaches on guitar riffs. But then Pinnick’s announcement in 1998 of his homosexuality. Another thing I disapprove: your sexual orientation should be another PRIVATE matter, don’t make a thing out it! (“Metal God” Rob Halford of Judas Priest did the same controversy announcement back in 1998…) As a result, the self-proclaimed religion of love (and tolerance) re-trait the support of the band and removed King’s X records from their distribution through Christian book stores. So, Pinnick has since openly discussed his agnosticism and his belief that Jesus Christ was not truly the Son of God, however, band mates Tabor and Gaskill, have a background in Christian rock and self-identify as Christians.
Too many non music related issues cloud the music… This is a quite dis-balanced and twisted world, isn’t it? And sometimes all that non music related buzz cover and kill the music. Fortunately, not this time!

Zardonic goes metal again Zardonic never kept secret his soft spot for metal. He had previously some noisy and contorted collaborations with several bad-ass metal artists and definitively he will keep having this kind of violent audio clashes. His powerful metal roots are clearly detectable on his early demos, early demos which also now are made available!
In the celebration of his 10th anniversary, Bass Metal overlord Zardonic has released three tracks in collaboration with Sweden’s metal prodigies, The Unguided (led by ex-Sonic Syndicate members), included in the limited edition of their most recent album “Fragile Immortality”. The tracks included are “When All The Seraphim Cry”, “Unguided Entity (Zardonic Remix)” and “Deathwalker (Zardonic Remix)”, featuring the voice of Hansi Kürsch, frontman of the legendary german heavy metal band Blind Guardian.
“Fragile Immortality” has been available in Europe since the 31st of January, and is available in North America today, February 14th, so you can celebrate your Valentine’s Day properly.
The label in charge of the album’s release is the legendary Napalm Records, who’s amazing roster includes Candlemass, Cavalera Conspiracy, DevilDriver, Grave Digger, Hate, Kampfar, Lacrimas Profundere, Legion of the Damned, Monster Magnet, Moonspell, Summoning, Tiamat, Tristania and Vintersorg, to mention a few. Cynic - Kindly Bent to Free Us (2014) Label Cynic as a metal band it’s at least ignorance. They grew out of that box pretty quickly and although they merged technical death metal and influences with jazz and progressive rock elements, their music was always something special and different. “Kindly Bent to Free Us”, their third full-length album, it’s a flawless mixture of modern sound and classic, progressive rock flavor with some jazzy reflections. Have some sort of King Crimson and Pink Floyd type of timeless and shiny (brilliant 🙂 ) feel.
The current line-up consist of veterans Paul Masvidal – vocals & guitars, Sean Reinert – drums & percussion and longtime, mainly studio collaborator Sean Malone – fretless bass, chapman stick.
Engineering by Jason Donaghy (Rob Zombie – Hellbilly Deluxe 2), mixed by R. Walt Vincent (Pete Yorn, Liz Phair, Tommy Keene and Jonathan Elias’ The Prayer Cycle), mastered by Maor Appelbaum (Adrenaline Mob, Sepultura, Halford, Armored Saint, Cathedral , etc), featuring the art work of Robert Venosa (among other works, the pre-sketches and conceptual design for the movie Dune), “Kindly Bent to Free Us” it’s a psychedelic sci-fi trip. EtHERSENS Your wandering ghost 2014

EtHERSENS Your wandering ghost 2014 Progressive metal became pretty much synonymous with Dream Theater. It’s probably not fair, but it’s a fact. EtHERSENS it’s a French progressive metal project and “Your wandering ghost” it’s their second album after considerable a six year gap.
While the opening, almost 10 minutes long “Two For One Mind” evoke the mentioned Dream Theater spirit and it’s an intense and powerful progressive metal hurricane, the following “Same Goodbye” merge some dark, shoegaze flavored atmosphere and ambiances with the classy Porcupine Tree flavor. Another name which came up in my mind was Pain Of Salvation.
So, this is not a one track-mind type of band and not a one track type of album. And the album it’s intense and colorful throughout, make the listener to listen, keep the interest alive from riff to riff, from break to break. They not only created a positive tension and expectation, but delivered exciting, quality music. Give it a shot! Of Mice & Men - Restoring Force (2014) I just saw a few days back “Through the Never” and listening the opening track of the third full-length studio abum by Of Mice & Men I realized that not one of these metal bands would sound the same if the Danish-born drummer Lars Ulrich and guitarist James Hetfield wouldn’t met in late 1981 after Ulrich placed an advertisement in a Los Angeles newspaper called The Recycler. Well, the second name which came in my mind was obviously Pantera. Without the contorted and twisted off riffs of Dimebag Darrell most of these new metal(core) bands would still riffing like Tony Iommi or like Dave Murray and Adrian Smith. And there’s nothing wrong riffing like that actually. 🙂
Although I’m not particularly excited about this new wave of so-called metalcore bands, Of Mice & Men is definitively one of the leading bands of the new generation and I liked their sound and style right from the beginning. With – or maybe because – of this Metallica/Pantera parallels, but also because they managed to re-assemble this classic influences into a new type of sound and approach. Backtrack – Lost In Life (2014) Pure, furious, edgy and old-school hardcore. There is nothing fancy, nothing meaningless, nothing just to fill in or fill up, but brutal riff, energy and honest, reasonable anger. And while honesty and being not a clown of the media and a dumb trend follower it’s quite rare, almost exceptional nowadays, Backtrack is an exceptional band with roots both back to punk and metal.
The Long Island bangers are stepping in the footsteps of their predecessors as Minor Threat, Agnostic Front, Cro-Mags, Biohazard – and delivering some raging anthems filled with killer riffs and upbeats. Let’s be honest! Nobody want to re-invent the hardcore, there is no secret, underground revolution going on, fans just want some loud and headbangable songs and pretty much that’s what Backtrack delivers more then fairly. Mechina - Xenon (2014) Released on the first day of 2014, “Xenon” is the fifth and the brand new symphonic-cyber-metal album of this Chicago based experimental, futuristic metal horde. For Fear Factory fans and followers, Mechina might be just on spot and “Xenon” the perfect year starter.
Dave Holch – Vocals, Joe Tiberi – Guitar, Steve Amarantos – Bass, and Dan Anderson – Drums delivered five albums in five years, which is a pretty intense agenda for any band. “Xenon” pick up where “Phedra” left off last November and the melange of electronic layers, orchestral/symphonic layers and the contorted and furious metal riffings work perfectly. This is a very dynamic and technically flawless mixture of different elements and styles. Based on industrial fueled death metal, the symphonic pads and electronic layers create an unique vibe and tension while the intensity of the music reaches explosively high levels throughout the album.
