Laibach – Spectre (2014) There are very few artists (bands) who still manage to surprise me these days. The 2006’s “Volk” was a peerless release, it’s quite impossible to overtake that album and Laibach definitively had a hard time to figure out what they should do next. True, meanwhile they released in 2008 “Laibachkunstderfuge” – a concept album, the laibachian interpretation of Johann Sebastian Bach’s “The Art of Fugue” (Lai-Bach-Kunst-Der-Fuge) – and in 2012 the original soundtrack for the movie “Iron Sky”. Also they released a mind blowing live album “Monumental Retro-Avant-Garde – Live at London Tate Modern 14 April 2012” and a consistent retrospective entitled “An Introduction To… Laibach”. While “Laibachkunstderfuge” was a quite exclusivist, unfriendly album in the manner of the early Laibach albums (Nova Akropola, Opus Dei, Macbeth, etc) the “Iron Sky” soundtrack consist of 40 tracks and 80 minutes of music.
Now, listening “Spectre” I’m both excited and pleased, Laibach is the same creative, groundbreaking art collective and they prove once again that there is music outside the mainstream and the “box”. Read more Laibach – Spectre (2014) ›

Spanish guitarist Paco de Lucia died at 66

Paco De Lucia BBC announced that world-renowned Spanish guitarist Paco de Lucia has died aged 66 in Mexico, reportedly of a heart attack while playing with his children on a beach. R.I.P.!
Paco de Lucía, born Francisco Sánchez Gómez (21 December 1947 – 26 February 2014) was a Spanish flamenco guitarist, composer and producer. A leading proponent of the New Flamenco style, he was one of the first flamenco guitarists who has also successfully crossed over into other genres of music such as classical and jazz. Richard Chapman and Eric Clapton, authors of Guitar: Music, History, Players, describe de Lucía as a “titanic figure in the world of flamenco guitar”, and Dennis Koster, author of Guitar Atlas, Flamenco, has referred to de Lucía as “one of history’s greatest guitarists”.
De Lucía was noted for his innovation and colour in harmony and his remarkable dexterity, technique, strength and fluidity in his right hand, capable of executing extremely fast and fluent picados. A master of contrast, he often juxtaposes picados with rasgueados and other techniques and often adds abstract chords and scale tones to his compositions with jazz influences. These innovations saw him play a key role in the development of traditional Flamenco and the evolution of New Flamenco and Latin jazz fusion from the 1970s. Skip the Use – Little Armageddon (2014)

Skip the Use – Little Armageddon (2014) While I’m drowning in a sea of absolutely boring music day after day, this pretty British sounding French band made my day and Monday. It’s a cool mixture of reggae, funk, punk-rock and accidentally some electronica. Smooth, groovy and nicely done. And genuine in a world of fake and plastic. Simply it feels right. Maybe it’s not revolutionary, it will not turn your world (and pity life) upside down, but it will keep you going. And although by default I would reject any mixture of punk with pop, this “Little Armageddon” sounds more convincing then most of the modern American self-declared punk products.
Mat Bastard (vocals), Yan Stefani (guitar), Jay Gimenez (bass), Lio Raepsaet (keyboards) and Manamax Catteloin (drums) at their third album just simply nailed it. Read more Skip the Use – Little Armageddon (2014) ›

Havana Club Cultura Mix remix contest I loved the Havana Club rum, it was one of the finest drinks we could have back in the 80’s. Now by remixing a track you have the chance to travel to one of the world’s music capitals to produce and record original tracks with a selection of Cuba’s finest musicians under the expert guidance of DJ Gilles Peterson.
Winners will spend ten days in the city of Havana producing original new music in the studio with executive producer Gilles Peterson and local musicians. A selection of the tracks resulting from the studio sessions will be compiled later in the year. When not in the studio, winners will be free to explore Havana’s sights, sounds and unique culture scene. All travel and living expenses as well as production and studio costs will be covered by Havana Club.

Xiu Xiu – Angel Guts Red Classroom (2014) “Angel Guts: Red Classroom” is the ninth studio album by Xiu Xiu, it’s scheduled for release on February 4, 2014, only two month away from the Nina Simone tribute album and entitled simply “Nina”. I still try to figure out if I like or I don’t like the music of singer-songwriter Jamie Stewart. There is a strong, charming, 70’s and 80’s rooted David Bowie flavor which is awesome. On the other hand, sometimes the sonic trips are going over the edge of bizarre and I’m not sure I’m always capable to follow them anywhere unconditionally. But at least I’m honest to admit it. Then again, I hate the snobs who pretend they understand everything and praise anything which it’s “out of the box”, just because it’s… odd. I’m a weirdo, but I have the decency to admit my limitations! 😆
So, Xiu Xiu it’s a music of moods. If you play it in the right circumstances, have the proper state of mind, the appropriate mood, you’re on the same trip, you will enjoy it. But if you’re on a different track, their twisted off adventures might feel like torture. This time we were on the same frequency. I like that fever burned, warm and wicked analog sound. The instruments used to record the album were limited to analog drum machines, analog synthesizers, and a drum set. The result it’s pretty dark and dense. Turn off the light, turn up the volume! Thot - Citizen Pain Ep I can think of and go back to several different stories. First of all, reminds me of the story of Cain and Able, the two sons of Adam and Eve. Cain was the first human born and Abel was the first human to die while Cain committed the first murder by killing his brother. On the other hand, directed by Orson Welles release on 5 September 1941, “Citizen Kane” was a drama which explored the life and legacy of the publishing tycoon Charles Foster Kane, played by Welles. Nothing of this are directly related to the latest Thot EP, but then again, everything in this world is somehow related and inter-connected. “Citizen Pain” is in particularly nobody, but he’s everybody and anybody, one of us and each one of us. Secret Chiefs 3 - Book Of Souls Folio A (2013) Secret Chiefs 3 (also known as SC3) is the brain-child of guitarist/composer Trey Spruance, formerly known as member of Mr. Bungle and later he joined Faith No More for their 1995 “King for a Day… Fool for a Lifetime” replacing breathy long-time guitarist Jim Martin. He’s also contributed to bands and artists such as: Faxed Head (as “Neck Head”), Noddingturd Fan (also NT Fan), Weird Little Boy (a one-off studio project), Jonh Zorn, Korn, Everlast, The Cucko For Cacca, Lick it Up, The Bon Larvis Band, ASVA, Scourge, The Three Doctors Band, Plainfield and Mark Shafeild.
Secret Chiefs 3’s studio recordings and tours have featured different line-ups, as the group perform and blend a wide variety of musical styles including traditional Jewish, Persian, Arab and Indian music; electronic music, jazz, rock and extreme metal.

Foxe Basin Get It Together Foxe Basin is a shallow oceanic basin north of Hudson Bay, in Nunavut, Canada, located between Baffin Island and the Melville Peninsula. For most of the year, it is blocked by ice floes.
The nutrient-rich cold waters found in the basin are known to be especially favorable to phytoplankton and the numerous islands within it are important bird habitats, including Sabine’s Gulls and many types of shorebirds. Bowhead whales migrate to the northern part of the basin each summer.
The basin takes its name from the English explorer Luke Foxe who entered the lower part in 1631. Born in Kingston-upon-Hull, Yorkshire, Luke Foxe searched for the Northwest Passage across North America. In 1631, he sailed much of the western Hudson Bay before concluding no such passage was possible. Foxe Basin, Foxe Channel and Foxe Peninsula were named after him.

kgc Singer/guitarist of Kabul Golf Club, (and also member of The Rott Childs) Florent Pevee has passed away on Friday 29 november. R.I.P.!
Contorted and dissonant, with roots back to Steve Albini’s Big Black and Shellac, reminding me of some pioneering bands such as Cop Shoot Cop, Cardiacs and H.P. Zinker, and being similarly psycho and sick such as some contemporaries like The Dillinger Escape Plan and Blood Brothers, Kabul Golf Club was one of the most promising experimental HC bands. Lady Gaga – ARTPOP (2013) Pop art was/is an art movement that emerged in the mid-1950s in Britain and in the late 1950s in the United States, Andy Warhol being one of its leading figure. Pop art presented a challenge to traditions of fine art by including imagery from popular culture such as advertising, news, etc. One of its most powerful instrument is creating collages, sometimes elements are removed from their known context, isolated, and/or combined with unrelated elements.
And this is something what it’s actually perfectly applicable to Lady Gaga’s third album called “Artpop”. It’s a vivid mixture of dance music (sub) genres, EDM meets hip hop, but nothing it’s art related, no matter how hard Lady Gaga try to shock her audience, followers and the media. Because – once again – this is more about shocking, more about the show, then about the music. What I said/write about “Born This Way” it’s pretty much applicable for “Artpop” as well. I still can sing while I’m showering songs like “Poker Face” or “Paparazzi”, I can’t recall a single melody from her previous album, those “hits” (“Born This Way”, “Judas”, and “The Edge of Glory”) were all less memorable then the songs from her debut album and listening to “Artpop”, around track 5 (“Jewels n’ Drugs”) I can’t recall a single good line or a chorus from her new songs. And this is pretty sad and disappointing. The production it’s fabulous, everything sound great and powerful, it’s quite minimal, but pretty fancy EDM, but there are no songs, the music it’s completely absent once again and a little bit scandal and controversy won’t make that frustrating feeling disappear.
