74 minutes and 13 seconds, “Heliogabalus” it’s the single track of Geneva’s (Switzerland) experimental black/doom/drone metal band Rocal formed in 2006.
The band’s members Junior, Bruno, Diogo, JP and Ron exploring the darkest side of the post/experimental-metal, a quite painful journey through some deep dark moments, sometimes quite mysterious ones, soundtrack-like shady, minimalist construnctions, contra-balanced by raw black metal explosions, noisy metal grindings.
Be prepared for suffering and torture…
After four efforts between 2007 and 2008 and about fifty shows through Europe, the band is now ready to release its fifth block of painful and contorted creation about darkness and despair. If you manage to get through (alive) on the rough and quite depressive opening sequences, the things get more interesting, Rorcal epic construction is gloomy and minimalist, noisy and simultaneously quite spacy, this monolithic and epic piece is not quite easy to chew and swallow, but its heaviness and darkness have its particular charm. Gloomy, sometimes even obscure, shady and cinematic moments are contrasting with moments of slow grinding, raw black/doom metal corrosion, it’s like a drowning, you get to the surface for a second and a breath of air only to dive deeper down back into the dark. Imagines of slow and painful death…
