John Zorn – Enigmata (2011)

John-Zorn-Enigmata Pour les connaisseurs. Strictly. Madness in pure essence, in small, but deadly doses. Under the moniker of John Zorn, Trevor Dunn – Electric 5-string bass (Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Trevor Dunn’s Trio-Convulsant, Secret Chiefs 3, The Rob Price Quartet, Shelley Burgon, Zorn, etc) and Marc Ribot – electric guitar (impossible to enumerate… Tom Waits, John Zorn, David Sylvian, Jack McDuff, Wilson Pickett, The Lounge Lizards, Arto Lindsay, T-Bone Burnett, Medeski, Martin and Wood, Cibo Matto, Elysian Fields, Sam Phillips, Elvis Costello, David Poe, Allen Ginsberg, Foetus, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Susana Baca, The Black Keys, Stan Ridgway, Vinicio Capossela, Alain Bashung, Lyenn, Hector Zazou, McCoy Tyner, Elton John, Madeline Peyroux, Marianne Faithfull, Leonid Fedorov, Tonio K, Andres Calamaro and many others, but also involved in a couple of projects as well) take us down on the path of compositions versus improvisations, in a tenebrous and tumultuous world of avant-garde (jazz) music.

“Ipsissimus” by Moonchild was my favorite album for 2010, both Dunn and Ribot play essential role in it along the genius of Zorn, Patton and drummer Joey Baron, this year Dunn played the bass also on Zorn’s “Nova Express” , but “Enigmata” is something quite different. At first it might seem a hard piece to swallow, but around track no. eight (at least for the moment, my favorite one), things get settled, they keep a glowing, exciting balance between structures and free experiments, madness and calm. This duo worked extremely organically, the music delivered it self in a kind of chaotic, but natural, blazing flow. Mind-grinding, but exciting.
Jazz Journalists Association (JJA) has nominated Marc Ribot for 2011 Guitarist of the Year. The other nominees are Bill Frisell, Jim Hall, Mary Halvorson and Russell Malone.
