Primal Scream – More Light (2013)

Primal Scream – More Light (2013) Alive and kicking, vivid, fresh, but still solid and timeless, Primal Scream are back. This is actually the tenth studio album by the Scottish band and they managed to put together an extremely groovy mixture of different tastes and flavours, styles and sounds from 60’s and 70’s rock to dance grooves, from psychedelic vividness to acid vibes.
The almost ten minutes of “2013” feels like a mantra, it’s dense, powerful, yet danceable and uplifting, absolutely addictive. The verses reminded me of Velvet Underground and Lou Reed, but they added to this a very modern, subtle groove and some secret ingredient which will set your nights on fire on the dance floor. “River Of Pain” it’s dark and psychedelic, soft and simple, but tensioned. Feels like an acoustic Depeche Mode track.
“Culturecide” it’s a hard to forget type of addictive, pounding (indie) rock anthem with powerful acid flavour. Then come the garage sounding “Hit Void” with a killer saxophone solo.
“Tenement Kid” have a warm and charming Beatles feel. And while they surfing from one thing to another, the whole production stay fit, solid, it’s Primal Scream all over and throughout. Read more Primal Scream – More Light (2013)

Queens of the Stone Age – …Like Clockwork (2013)

Queens of the Stone Age - …Like Clockwork [2013] The Queens are – finally – back. I remembered that Josh Homme once said that “Rock should be heavy enough for the boys and sweet enough for the girls.” It’s exactly what “…Like Clockwork” it’s about. It’s Kyuss, a little bit Screaming Trees and a little bit Monster Magnet with additional Sweethead, Eagles of Death Metal, The Dead Weather and Them Crooked Vultures reflections and reminiscences, it’s Queens of the Stone Age throughout. It’s rock music without any particular label could stick too long on their music. The blues roots are there as the heavy and dark riffs are also there pumping throughout the album. Everybody can find and pick his favorite moments and songs of the album, nobody will be disappointed, every consumer will be satisfied and properly served. It’s simultaneously something good and something annoying about this, but listening the album consequently for several times, I started liking the parts and moments initially I didn’t really appreciate it and eventually ended up liking it throughout.
Still, probably I’m not their biggest fan, but this sixth album it’s a very strong and solid release, have character, have a particular mood and groove throughout, it’s very different from most of the plastic and soulless products that flood the market these days, it rocks your socks off!! 6:33 & Arno Strobl – The Stench From The Swelling, A True Story (2013)

633 & Arno Strobl - The Stench From The Swelling (A True Story) (2013) I was in love with 6:33’s 2011 album “Orphan of Good Manners” because it was something out of conventional, fresh and creative. This French band is on the scene since the end of 2008 and now they teamed up with singer Arno Strobl (Burgul Torkhaïn, Carnival in Coal, Maladaptive, Funny Crime) to bring their searches and experiments to the next level.
True, the only downside of this project is the haunting phantom of Mike Patton who is all over the material, but if you’re into Tomahawk, Fantômas and Peeping Tom, this will definitively get to your soul as well, just as it get to mine. But we have to admit, Patton became kind of synonym with avant-garde metal which means on one hand that he’s genius, on the other hand, the scene is kind of small and narrow, not too many people are actually pushing that goddamn old envelope anymore, there are not too many paths to go down.
But then again, 6:33 and Arno Strobl delivered a fine and flawless album, a very colorful and refreshing trip to the experimental fields and outer limits of post-modern rock/metal. This might not be trendy enough, might not bring down the Billboard and probably will not sell million copies, but still, this is something worth to buy and listen! Los Disidentes del Sucio Motel – Arcane (2013)

Los Disidentes del Sucio Motel Arcane (2013)This is head banging, teeth grinding, bone breaking, soul crushing heavy rock. Listening “Arcane” almost can smell the dust from the road filling up the holes of my nose. Merging Black Sabbath and Kyuss flavored heaviness with Motorhead taste like rides, bringing in the same crossroad Alice In Chains and Monster Magnet with Led Zeppelin and Down, this is the most explicit and appropriate expression of road tripping on the back of the bike and afterward partying till the dawn in a strip club with a whiskey in one hand and a beer in the other.
Last time they made a damn good impression with “Soundtrack From The Motion Picture”, the new album it’s even better. 11 flawless tracks, a hell of a ride and a perfect collection of tracks. Memorable riffs, powerful sound and good old distortion throughout. Can’t wish for something else! Read more Los Disidentes del Sucio Motel – Arcane (2013)

Joe Satriani – Unstoppable Momentum (2013)

Joe Satriani Unstoppable Momentum (2013) I’m not one of the unconditional fans of the modern guitar virtuosos. My guitar heroes were (and still are) Hendrix, Zappa, Page, Iommi, etc. More recently Buckethead and several more jazz oriented guitar players as Aram Bajakian or Marc Ribot. But I admit, I was quite into “Flying in a Blue Dream”, it was an album I loved and I still do. Although I had listen almost each and every album he played on, including the G3 project and the hard rocking Chickenfoot, I always find at least a couple of great songs, nice passages, interesting parts on his works.
Satriani came into focus when one of his first students, Steve Vai started mentioning his name quite often. His students included Kirk Hammett of Metallica, David Bryson of Counting Crows, Kevin Cadogan from Third Eye Blind, Larry LaLonde of Primus and Possessed, Alex Skolnick of Testament, Rick Hunolt (ex-Exodus), Phil Kettner of Lääz Rockit, Geoff Tyson of T-Ride, Charlie Hunter and David Turin. During the G3 tours, which he founded in 1996, he invited and collaborated with several famous guitarists such as Vai, LaLonde, Timmons, Steve Lukather, John Petrucci, Eric Johnson, Yngwie Malmsteen, Brian May, Patrick Rondat, Paul Gilbert, Adrian Legg, Steve Morse and Robert Fripp.
“Unstoppable Momentum” is the fourteenth studio solo album by Satriani and it’s scheduled to be released on May 7. He will tour the album with Marco Minnemann on drums and Bryan Beller on bass. The album was recorded by Joe Satriani – guitar, production, Mike Keneally – keyboard, Vinnie Colaiuta – drums, Chris Chaney – bass and engineered and co-produced by Mike Fraser. Steve Coleman & the Five Elements – Functional Arrhythmias (2013)

Steve Coleman & the Five Elements - Functional Arrhythmias (2013) Steve Coleman began playing music just days before his 14th birthday and nowadays, 43 years later, Steve Coleman’s music it’s still fresh and he’s still hungry to explore magical-mystery places, unrevealed paths and dimensions, he’s still searching for the unheard and unconventional.
And many of his incredible musical adventures are still available for free download on his official site, at the download section (including some of those albums I had falling in love with more then two decades ago as “Rhythm People”, “Black Science”, “Drop Kick”,”The Tao of Mad Phat”or “Anatomy Of A Groove”). Really cool, but don’t you ever forget, artists need our full support to be able to deliver unconditional art in a world of conditional and conditioning. Deep Purple – Now What (2013)

Deep Purple Now What 2013 A band formed 45 years ago are getting to their 19th studio album and have sold over 100 million albums worldwide, including 7.5 million certified units in the US. If this isn’t a true hard rock legend, don’t know what it is.
Drummer Ian Paice was there from the beginnings in ’68, bass player Roger Glover and singer Ian Gillan joined the band for the first time in ’69, guitarist Steve Morse replaced Ritchie Blackmore in ’94 after the band was refused by the touring replacement of Blackmore, the legendary Joe Satriani. Don Airey joined in 2002, when founding member, keyboard player Jon Lord announced his amicable retirement from the band.
I heard the single “All The Time In The World” for the first time and as result, I almost skipped the album. It’s a quite tasteless, mediocre, forgettable single, pretty bad choice I think. Fortunately I was curious enough and I had the time and the patience to listen into the whole album and I was pleasantly surprised. Read more Deep Purple – Now What (2013)
