Rufus Wainwright – Bitter Tears and… Glitter Fears

Not a fan of Rufus, actually this remix contest is the first collision of mine with his music. Indaba Music and Rufus wanted a remix of “Bitter Tears”, one of the new songs featuring on the upcoming seventh studio album, “Out of the Game”, scheduled for release in the United Kingdom and Canada in April 2012 and in the United States in May 2012 through Decca Records/Polydor Records. I find the song interesting, but pretty dense and when I almost gave up on this one, I had a last moment inspiration and twist this song into my own. Well, while they stated that “put your personal spin on this captivating tune” this might actually work. I kept the things pretty simple and straight, knocked my self out having fun with some naughty delays and build-up a noisy, contorted kind of chorus, so this song is actually another song.
Please listen, have fun and VOTE if you really love what you’ll gonna hear.

So, this is my track, expect the unexpected – as usual. And just for the record: while most of the discussions are around the fact he’s gay, once again, I’m only interested in the music.

Wainwright was born in Rhinebeck, New York, to folk singers Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III. His parents divorced when he was three, and he lived with his mother in Montreal for most of his youth. Wainwright has dual US and Canadian citizenship.[3] He attended high school at the Millbrook School in New York (which would later inspire his song “Millbrook”), and later briefly studied piano at both Concordia and McGill Universities in Montreal. He began playing the piano at age six, and started touring at 13 with “The McGarrigle Sisters and Family”, a folk group featuring Rufus, his sister Martha, his mother Kate, and aunt Anna. His song “I’m a-Runnin'”, which he performed in the film Tommy Tricker and the Stamp Traveller at the age of 14, earned him a nomination for a 1989 Genie Award for Best Original Song.[4] He was nominated for a 1990 Juno Award for Most Promising Male Vocalist of the Year.
Wainwright’s second album, “Poses”, was released to critical acclaim but limited sales. The album ranked No.117 on the Billboard 200 and No.1 on the Top Heatseekers chart. “Poses” won a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Music Album, a Juno Award for Best Alternative Album, and was nominated by the Juno Awards for Best Songwriter (“Poses” / “Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk” / “Grey Gardens”). From 2001 to 2004, he toured with Tori Amos, Sting, Ben Folds, and Guster, as well as headlining the 2001 and 2002 tour in support of the album.
“Out of the Game” was produced by Mark Ronson and guest musicians include his sister Martha Wainwright, Thomas “Doveman” Bartlett, drummer Andy Burrows, guitarist Nels Cline, members of the Dap-Kings, Sean Lennon, the alternative rock band Wilco, Miike Snow’s Andrew Wyatt and Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner.

  1. don’t know man – don’t waste all your good tricks on one camp guy. since he came out as gay his vibes are getting more and more ‘queenly’ and everything in this songs proves it and the red outfit too – so I think putting back some balls into his music is not exactly ‘in the spirit’ of his audience however good it sounds..

    • 😆 😆 😆
You got a good point, and probably you’re right. Fortunately I’ve got some more tricks up my sleeves….

    • Probably, but homophobia – it’s just my personal opinion on this issue – it’s sometimes quite justified. Living in a strange world where minorities often have more rights then majorities and anomalies are protected and conserved while “normality” discriminated. Generally in arts – music, film, fashion – nowadays is a kind of cast of the gays and they support each other and if you’re not gay, you have less chances to get in, make a career. It’s not fair, isn’t it?
Also I kind of disagree with the idea of “gay pride parade”. I’m not proud of being straight and definitively see no sense in being proud of anything….

And by the way, thanks again for this!

  2. Essentially I agree with you, but the reason there are Gay Pride events is because there has been such a long history of oppression…but now, here in England, they have pretty much dropped the ‘gay’ from the ‘pride’…so it is now a celebration of diversity in all it’s forms. But you’re ok…you’ve got it sussed, just keep doing what you’re doing and believe in yourself….so be a little bit proud of that!

    • Yeah, but we have the good tradition to jump over the horse… – if I can express myself this way.
      Thanks, sometimes I like my products as well….. 😆 – , but not all the time…. 😆
You’re doing pretty interesting things yourself Richard and there are people who definitively appreciate our efforts.
