Sixx: A.M. – This Is Gonna Hurt (2011)

“If you don’t deal with your demons, they will deal with you, and it’s gonna hurt.” – said Nikki Sixx and mainly this is the essence of this new album. Actually this is “an original soundtrack” to accompanied the book, part photo chronicle and part journal, a follow up to his New York Times bestseller, “The Heroin Diaries”, released on April 12th. This Is Gonna Hurt” chronicles Sixx’s experience, from references to his early years filled with toxic waste to his success with Mötley Crüe, his death from an over-dose and rebirth to his addictions to music, photography, and love along with the journey of photographing these images over the past couple of years.
The album debut at #1 in the Billboard’s “Hard Rock Chart”, and also charted on Billboard 200 on #10, #5 Rock Albums, #9 Digital Albums, #3 Independent Album and #16 Tastemaker Album. Another success story.
Nikki Sixx teamed up in 2007 with DJ Ashba (currently Guns N’ Roses, ex-BulletBoys, ex-Beautiful Creatures) and record producer, songwriter, engineer, mixer, vocalist and musician James Michael to form this side-project and the name Sixx:A.M. is a combination of all of the member’s last names (Sixx, Ashba, Michael).
The band released “The Heroin Diaries” Soundtrack in 2007, which is based upon Sixx’s autobiography, “The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star”.
“This Is Gonna Hurt” is the collection of 11 new songs, the band balancing between heavy and softer sounds, merging from industrial after-taste textures and elements to country-rock themes, blending everything into a modern American hard rock construction. From nice ballads to gloomy rock-anthems, they put together a glowing, flowing rock album, it may be quite commercial, but still it’s an absolutely fair material, a 100% work and they visibly tried to satisfy any demand. Maybe they try a little bit too hard, but it seems everybody will find something for his taste. And well, I have to admit, this is a nice blending of modern and classic rock and they actually have a couple of great songs.
